Graduated Driver’s License (GDL)

The GDL program is the standard program that all potential drivers must undertake and complete in order to obtain a full Class 5 license. Prior to this, applicants must have held a Class 7 learner’s license for at least one year without incurring any penalties. Driving classes Calgary applicants must also be a minimum of 16 years of age and have passed a Class 5 basic road test.

Class 5 Course

Direct Driving School provide Calgary driving classes that consist of both practical and theoretical elements. Applicants will be expected to complete 15 hours of classroom time and 10 hours of driving lessons divided into blocks of 5x two-hour sessions. Classroom-based lessons are held on Saturdays from 09:00 until 17:30 and Sundays from 12:30 until 21:00.

Lessons can be booked at any time from Monday to Sunday between 08:00 and 20:00. Applicants who complete the Class 5-GDL program will obtain a certificate of insurance. This demonstrates that the student is capable of operating any two-axle single motor vehicle including a moped (but excluding a motorcycle) without supervision.

Those with a Class 5-GDL license will also be permitted to operate any recreational vehicle with a trailer. The trailer must have no more than two axles and must not be equipped with air-brakes.
